Moving into a new home is an exciting time that is filled with a never ending to-do list. Due to the hecticness of the event, some really important things can get swept under the rug. Worry not, as this comprehensive list of the most important things you should do when moving into a new home can guide you along the way.

Change the locks

When moving into a new home it’s crucial that changing the locks be the first step you take. You never know who may have a key to the previous locks, or how many keys exist that can access your new home. Change the locks on all outside facing doors to ensure you and your family’s safety. If you are looking to keep the cost down you can do this yourself, or supply the new locks you intend to use for the locksmith.

Register or transfer all utilities

Electricity makes everything better, including moving. Before your move date, make sure you give all your utility companies a call so you can get set up with them. It’s best to do this beforehand so you don’t have to spend time without electric, especially in the hotter or colder months when HVAC is necessary! On this same note, check to be sure your refrigerator and any other necessary appliances are plugged in and ready to go upon your arrival.

Start scrubbing!

That’s right, the moment we’ve all been waiting for: cleaning your new home for the first time. If possible, get in ahead of time to complete this important step. If you have too much on your plate, there is no shame in hiring a cleaning company to come in for the first sweep, just as long as someone gets the job done.

Prepare for your first night

Pack an overnight bag of easily accessible items that you know you will need your first night, but don’t want to go digging for. Also, bring food and drinks! Stock your fridge with easy to consume foods and beverages that don’t require heating or cooking to make the transition easier and more enjoyable.

It’s important to remember that moving into a new home takes time, so plan out a schedule of what you hope to accomplish each day, and make an end goal of when you hope to be settled. Also, keep in mind you will need things for your first morning as well, don’t forget to pack the coffee!
